Thursday 4th October 2012 Debate with Carlisle & District Speakers Club at Carlisle

Five members travelled to Carlisle on a wet, windy night. Anna Wilson and Jess Longrigg spoke for the motion that ‘the school leaving age should be lowered to 15’, with two members from Carlisle speaking against it. The audience were asked at the beginning take indicate wether they were for or against (9 for 11 against) All four speakers spoke very well and dealt competantly with the numerous questions from the floor before the audience gave their final vote 10 for 9 against, 1 abstention. West Coast Club, the winners! A ballot vote was then taken by the audience for the team with the best individual performance, West Coast Club achieved a clear majority, another success! This was a very enjoyable, interesting and educational evening, well organised, with the large audience showing a great deal of interest in the subject. The refreshments at the interval included scones and jam, much appreciated by our team. The winning team were given a prize, large tin of ‘celebration’ chocolates! As we walked to the car park, Jess clutching the tin, we all commented on the warm atmosphere created by those who attended and how pleasing it was to see some guests.
