David Preshaw chaired tonight’s meeting. We were pleased to welcome a prospective new member: Rose Roslan, originally from Kuala Lumpur. Rose was at boarding school in Edinburgh in 1995. She then obtained a degree at Manchester Universityin Engineering. We were delighted when she agreed to join in the topic section, when we learned that her pet Rotweiler called Rodney is the apple of her eye!
Jess gave us a preview of her speech at the forthcoming competition at the Area Conference. It was evaluated by Frank who struggled with it because it was a typical ‘Jess speech’ original and very different from most other speeches we hear at the club. He asked the members for feedback at the end of the meeting. Liz gave an impromptu speech about her experiences in Belgium, concentrating on their version of our NHS. David Heaton evaluated the speech, giving praise for content and delivery, along with some advice on the areas where it could be improved.
David Preshaw then gave us the topics session based on the theme “best intentions’. All the topics were loosely based on New Year resolutions. Mike informed us that his was not to have any in future, but sadly he had already broken it! Frank’s was to stop watching his favourite football team, the Arsenal! The other members followed in the same humorous vein. Afterwards the members gave good feedback for Jess to consider when finalising her competition speech. Mike, as General Evaluator, summed up the meeting, highlighting the positives as well as some areas for improvement.
